Respite

W.I.L.L provides safe, meaningful, and supportive respite designed to give families a break while ensuring young people experience stability, connection, and capacity-building in a nurturing environment.
Respite is not “babysitting” — it is a structured, supportive 1:1 service that helps participants regulate, build skills, and access enjoyable, enriching experiences while giving carers time to rest and recharge.
1. Safe, Predictable, 1:1 Support
Every respite shift includes:
-
Consistent, trained support workers
-
Predictable routines customised to the participant
-
Sensory-aware environments
-
Emotional safety and low-arousal responses
-
Trauma-informed support throughout the day or night
Respite is always personalised to what helps the young person feel grounded and comfortable.
2. Emotional Regulation & Behaviour Support
Our team provides:
-
Co-regulation and emotional coaching
-
Support through transitions or overwhelm
-
BSP implementation as required
-
Understanding responses to distress behaviours
-
Calm, compassionate approaches that maintain dignity
We ensure each young person feels safe and supported at all times.
3. Life Skills & Independence Opportunities
Respite time can gently build independence through:
-
Morning and evening routine practice
-
Cooking or helping prepare meals
-
Household participation (cleaning, organising, laundry)
-
Personal care prompting and support (capacity-building only)
-
Time management and scheduling practice
All activities are tailored to the participant’s developmental and sensory needs.
4. Fun, Recreational & Enriching Experiences
Respite is also time for joy and connection.
We support participants to engage in:
-
Outings to parks, beaches, markets, and community locations
-
Quiet, home-based activities (art, gaming, reading, crafts)
-
Special interest exploration (dinosaurs, trains, nature, animals, etc.)
-
Movement-based activities (walks, swings, playgrounds, gyms)
-
Relaxation routines (sensory time, mindfulness, downtime)
We meet the young person where they are — at their pace, in their comfort.
5. Social & Communication Skill Building
During respite, we support:
-
Safe and supported social interactions
-
Communication skill development (including AAC)
-
Play-based learning
-
Confidence interacting with others
-
Boundaries, consent, and personal safety skills
All social learning happens organically, without pressure.
