Meet our Dogs
At W.I.L.L, our dogs are an integral and much-loved part of our supportive environment—and an essential element of our day program. In partnership with Liz from A Dog’s Choice, our teens participate in regular dog-training sessions where they learn how to care for, support, and train dogs on their journey toward becoming well-mannered companion, therapy, or assistance dogs (under the guidance of qualified trainers).
This hands-on involvement not only strengthens the bond between the young person and the dog, but also builds confidence, responsibility, empathy, communication skills, and a genuine sense of achievement.
Research shows that interactions with animals can reduce stress responses, support emotional regulation, and increase feelings of safety and stability. For many of our teens, spending time with the dogs is especially helpful during moments of overwhelm, sensory overload, or big emotions—helping them feel more grounded, calm, and connected.
Dogs also provide a relatable, pressure-free way to connect—making them the perfect icebreaker for new participants. Meeting a gentle, friendly dog on arrival often eases first-day nerves, reduces social pressure, and creates an immediate sense of welcome.
Perhaps the most special part of our program is the relationship that grows between our teens and the dogs they help train. Whether they are practising basic commands, grooming, socialising the dogs, or supporting them in new environments, the young people are actively involved in the dogs’ development. This collaborative learning fosters trust, connection, and shared progress—beautifully supporting our “whole-person, whole-family” approach.
Our dogs do not replace clinical or therapeutic treatment. Instead, they offer consistent, gentle companionship and opportunities for regulation, connection, and skill-building as part of a broader, non-clinical support program.
